Orthodontic treatment is almost considered a rite of passage for many of us during our youth, and if you had to wear braces during your youth, you probably remember that time all too fondly! Regardless, you might feel a little reluctant to hear from your dentist that your teeth might benefit from a second round of braces – but is this really necessary and beneficial? Continue reading to learn more about why some patients end up needing to wear braces a second time, along with a few benefits to undergoing orthodontics again as an adult!
Why Would I Need to Wear Braces Again?
Teeth often shift simply as a result of getting older. Much like how your vision or hearing might worsen over time, other aspects of your physical body can change as the years go by, including your teeth – even if you’ve worn braces in the past! In fact, there’s even a chance that it might happen soon after your braces have initially been removed.
After wearing braces, teeth need time to permanently settle into their new positions, which is why patients are given a retainer to wear that holds them in place. Some retainers are temporary, but others require a lifetime commitment. If you don’t adhere to wearing your retainer following your treatment, your teeth could very well shift back to where they once were, warranting further treatment later. It’s also possible for injury or dental problems to lead to a braces re-do. Even the wisdom teeth arriving can shift teeth enough to where braces are needed again. Of course, some complex orthodontic cases might also anticipate two rounds of braces right off the bat.
What Are the Benefits of Wearing Braces a Second Time?
It’s easy to feel reluctant if you’ve been told that you need to wear braces again, but you shouldn’t feel disheartened – there are many benefits to undergoing the process a second time! Consider the following:
- Having straight teeth and a properly aligned bite assists with basic oral functions, such as biting, chewing, and speaking.
- Braces are normally much faster the second time around since the teeth require less movement.
- Braces are normally easier the second time around; not only do patients know what to expect, but updates in dental technology have made the whole process more comfortable.
If your teeth have shifted after wearing braces, you aren’t alone – many patients end up having to go through a second round of orthodontic treatment. But if you fall into this group, know that you’ll benefit greatly for the rest of your life by going through this process one last time!
