Are you rapidly approaching the end of your orthodontic treatment timeline? Then you are only a few weeks (or maybe even days!) away from seeing your new and improved smile. But what happens next? If you’re like many patients, you’ve dreamed of the day you no longer need to wear metal brackets and wires but aren’t entirely sure how to care for your smile moving forward. Don’t worry – here’s everything you need to know about life after braces.
You’ll Need to Wear a Retainer
While the metal brackets and wires have moved your teeth into their perfectly aligned positions, they’ll need some help staying there. That’s where your retainer comes in! This orthodontic appliance will keep your teeth in place as they “set.” As a result, you’ll likely be asked to wear them for 22 hours a day for the first six months or so. After that, you’ll be given the green light to transition to wearing them only at night.
Eating Will Feel a Bit Different
By the end of your time with braces, you probably hardly remember what it felt like not to have them on your teeth. So, eating will feel a bit different at first. Initially, you may experience some soreness, which is why it’s good to stick to soft foods, like yogurt and applesauce. From there, you’ll be able to incorporate your favorite foods again. Just make sure to avoid lots of sugar!
Taking Care of Your Teeth Will Be Easy
Brushing and flossing with braces requires some extra time and, in some cases, some special tools. Once your metal brackets and wires are gone, however, your oral hygiene routine will be much more hassle-free! All you need to do is brush twice a day, floss daily, and rinse with mouthwash regularly.
You’ll Need to Visit Your Dentist
Once your braces are off, one of the first things on your list of to-dos should be visiting your dentist. Not only will they be able to thoroughly clean your teeth, but they will also be able to address any discoloration that has occurred. Plus, they can monitor your wisdom teeth throughout the years to ensure they don’t compromise your results.
Getting your braces off is a reason to celebrate! So, make sure to grab a bite to eat and show it off to your family and friends. Just remember that although your time with braces is over, your time with your retainer has just begun. To preserve your beautiful new smile, make sure to wear it and take care of your teeth.
